PHENOMENA IN THE SKY
Ever wondered what can you see in the sky except „just“ the stars? Well, this section is the answer! We created a list of the most common phenomena that you can experience on the island of Møn during the year – summer and winter Milky Way, Noctilucent Clouds, several meteor showers and even the Northern Lights!
Explore the seasons section to find out when it is the best time to enjoy the Milky Way core or to see several hundred meteors burning in the Earth’s atmosphere.
The sky calendar provides information and dates for all the upcoming astronomical events – you can use that for planning of your stay at the campsite to get the best stargazing experience.
MILKY WAY
The most noticeable part of the Milky Way, the Great Rift, can be seen in the evenings from late summer until December and in the mornings in late spring.
The best time to observe the galactic core, which is located 27 000 light years away from Earth, is August, September, April and May.
AURORA
Northern Lights is probably the most fascinating phenomenon to watch.
As Denmark is located pretty far South from the North Magnetic Pole, only strong outbursts of the solar plasma can spark visible Auroras over Møn. But it’s all about patience – keep an eye on the weather forecast together with the data of Solar activity and you might witness sky glowing with the green light!
METEOR SHOWERS
Every year you can enjoy several bright meteor showers, caused by the comet fly-bys. Meteor showers get their names from constellations, where radiant is located.
The brightest are Quadrantids, Geminids and Perseids with more than 100 visible meteors per hour!
NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS
Noctilucent (Night Shining/Space) Clouds are the highest clouds in the Earth’s atmosphere, being formed at the altitude of 80 km.
In the Northern hemisphere, as the summer sun dips down below the horizon, tiny icy crystals in the atmosphere’s upper levels near the Space, will start reflecting the sunlight. If you are an owl and like to stay awake till late night, step outside and watch the silver waves covering the sky!
